Shunt , or, in other words, a current shunt is the simplest, if not to say, a primitive device that is designed to “redirect” current around any section of an electrical circuit or circuit. Usually, a low-resistance resistor, coil, or any other conductor is used as a shunt.
The main task of the shunt is to create a parallel connection to some object in order to reduce the total resistance. For example, shunts are often used in conjunction with an ammeter to increase the upper limit of measurement.
A commercially manufactured current shunt is a low-resistance resistor made from a metal plate or wire. The main structural difference between a shunt and a resistor is the presence of 4 leads, or clamps. The two terminals to which current is applied are called current , and the terminals from which voltage is removed are called potential . Shunts are made from manganin .
Shunts designed for low current (30 A) and built into the device are usually called internal shunts. High current external shunts are used on the outside of the instrument, thereby preventing the instrument from overheating.
The main characteristics of shunts are the voltage drop across the shunt and the maximum operating current.
