Connecting sleeves are purchased to create reliable, durable and electrically stable connections in cable lines. They are designed to combine two or more copper wires by crimping, provide minimal transient resistance and high mechanical strength of the joint.
Cable sleeves are used in switchgear, power lines, billboards and any electrical networks where a high-quality and safe connection of conductors is required.
Selection criteria for connecting sleeves for copper wires for crimping
When ordering connectors, it is important to take into account the specifics of the project and the operating conditions in order to ensure the safety, durability and energy efficiency of the system.
Conductor cross section
The dimensions of the sleeve must correspond to the cross-section of the connected cores. A mismatch leads to contact deterioration, overheating, or damage to the conductor. Manufacturers mark connectors by cross-section - this parameter is the key when buying.
Manufacturing material
Two types are used.
- Copper. A standard low-cost solution for most applications, it provides high conductivity.
- Tinned copper. GML connectors have a higher price, but they can be used in conditions of high humidity and in aggressive environments.
Mounting tool and connection insulation
Only a specialized crimping tool can be used to perform crimping. It provides a controlled and uniform compression. A hexagonal or point crimping profile is formed, which guarantees stable electrical contact over the entire joint area.
Types of tools
- Manual press pliers. They are used when working with small and medium cross-sections - usually up to 16-25 mm2.
- Hydraulic presses. They are used for large cross-sections (from 25 mm2 and above), where significant effort is required to form a high-quality crimping.
The use of pliers, side cutters, hammers and any improvised tools is unacceptable, since they do not provide the necessary density and quality of contact.
Insulation after crimping
After crimping, the connecting sleeve must be carefully insulated. The best way is a heat shrink tube. It is put on the wire before crimping, then moved to the junction and heated. The tube is tightly fixed, forming a strong and airtight insulating layer.
