Hammer drills are tools that are essentially a hybrid of a drill and a jackhammer. The main working mode of the hammer drill is to simultaneously rotate a powerful drill and strike it, so it can effectively drill / gouge holes in reinforced concrete or brick, which is beyond the power of a conventional impact drill. Most modern rotary hammers are three-mode, i.e. they can work not only in the combined “impact-drilling” mode, like a puncher itself; but also in the "drilling" modes, like a conventional drill; and "hit" mode, like a jackhammer.
