Reed relays are devices with closing contacts, which consist of two contact cores with high magnetic permeability. These cores are placed in a sealed glass container, which is filled with an inert gas, pure nitrogen or a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen. This environment prevents oxidation of the cores.
The glass container is installed inside the control winding, which is powered by a DC network. By applying current to the reed relay winding, a magnetic field arises that passes through the contact cores along the working gap between them, after which the magnetic field closes through the air around the control coil.
