Current monitoring relays provide continuous monitoring of the load in electrical circuits and automatic control of equipment when parameters deviate from the norm. They are indispensable for protecting electric motors, pumps, compressors and other installations from emergency conditions: overload, phase interruption, idling or unacceptable current asymmetry. Timely power off prevents costly repairs and equipment downtime.

The principle of operation of the current control relay

The device compares the actual value of the electric current coming from the measuring transformer or shunt with the set threshold of operation:

  1. If the set limit is exceeded or the current drops below the minimum value, the internal circuit switches the output contacts.
  2. This, in turn, turns off the load or activates the alarm.

The return to working condition occurs automatically or manually after troubleshooting.

The main types of current monitoring relays

  • By design: single-phase and three-phase models.
  • In terms of functionality: maximum current relays (to be ordered for overload protection), minimum current relays (for monitoring idle speed, belt breakage), phase asymmetry and combined.

How to choose the right current monitoring relay

Key purchase criteria:

  • The range of controlled current. It must exceed the operating parameter of your equipment with a margin. Consider using external transformers for high values.
  • Type of current and supply voltage. It is necessary to clearly match the parameters of your network (220 V, 380 V, 24 V DC, etc.).
  • The type of output device. An electromechanical relay or a solid-state (contactless) relay with the appropriate switching parameters.

The use of current monitoring relays significantly increases the reliability of the power supply. The operation of mechanisms in underloaded or overloaded mode is excluded, which prolongs the life of the drives. Energy and repair costs are reduced.

Installation, configuration, and operation recommendations

The installation is carried out in a de-energized state on a DIN rail or mounting plate. When using external current transformers, strictly observe the connection polarity. Adjust the trip thresholds based on the engine rating data or experimentally measured operating current.
