A digital multimeter replaces a whole set of measuring instruments. With these testers, you can quickly and accurately check the voltage in the outlet, find out if the light bulb or battery is working properly, ring the wire for breakage, etc. Versatility, ease of use, and precision make the digital multimeter an indispensable tool in any workshop, garage, or home.

Functional

Modern digital multimeters vary in their capabilities, but all measure a basic set of values: voltage (V), amperage (A), and resistance (Ohm). Some devices have automatic range selection, which greatly simplifies the process.

Key parameters:

  • The bit depth. Determines how many decimal places the tester will show. For most household tasks, 3.5 digits are enough, and for precise electronic work it is better to choose 4.5.
  • The presence of True RMS (TRMS). A multimeter with this option accurately measures alternating voltage and current in circuits with non-linear loads (for example, with frequency converters, dimmers), where conventional devices can be very wrong.
  • Measurement ranges. Pay attention to the maximum values that the tester can measure. For example, most models are suitable for 220 V mains voltage, and a specialized device is needed to work with high-voltage circuits.

How to choose

  1. For household use (checking sockets, wiring, batteries), they buy inexpensive and simple models with basic functions. The main thing is the availability of overload protection and ease of use.
  2. To repair electronics (phones, computers, power supplies), you should order a more accurate tester with ringing, checking diodes, measuring low resistances and, preferably, with True RMS.
  3. High accuracy, reliable protection, and extensive functionality are critical for industrial and professional applications.

Be sure to pay attention to the safety class (CAT):

  • CAT II - bought for measurements in household electrical appliances.
  • CAT III is ordered for work in switchboards and stationary installations (for example, wiring in a house).
  • CAT IV is optimal for measurements at an electric power source (input panels, meters).

Other useful options may include backlighting the display, holding readings, and the ability to connect to a PC to collect data. For detailed instructions on how to use a specific model, see the manual (included in the delivery package).

Common mistakes

Improper use of a digital multimeter can cause it to break or, worse, cause injury.

  • Lack of protection. Make sure that the device has fuses and overload protection, especially in current measurement mode.
  • An attempt to determine the voltage when the probes are plugged into the sockets for measuring current. This is guaranteed to cause a short circuit. How do I check if the probes are connected correctly? Follow the color coding (black in COM, red in VOhm) and the diagrams in the instructions.
  • Using a multimeter to measure the current in a circuit break without adequate protection and preparation. Special devices, current clamps, are designed for safe current measurement without breaking the circuit.
  • Working out of range. Do not try to measure the voltage of 1000 V with a device with a limit of 600 V.
