Switches, multiplexers, and demultiplexers are electronic components for routing analog signals. They allow you to connect to the desired channel, combine several inputs into one output, or, conversely, distribute one input to several outputs. In fact, these are switches and distributors that replace mechanical relays and simplify control of the measuring or processing path.

Such chips are used where it is necessary to flexibly select a signal source, save lines and connectors, automate testing or build a multi-channel system. They are bought for measuring equipment and sensors, industrial automation, telemetry, medical equipment, audio tracks, and embedded electronics.

Selection criteria for switches, multiplexers, and demultiplexers

Number of channels

It is selected depending on how many signals need to be switched.

  • 2-4 channels: simple switching of sources, audio links, ADC input selection.
  • 8-16 channels: sensor scanning, multi-channel measurements.
  • 32 channels and higher: data acquisition and automated control systems, test benches, distributed measurement modules.

Power supply and acceptable signal range

The choice depends on which signal levels you are switching.:

  • Bipolar power supply (±5...±18 V) is convenient for analog paths with signals below/above 0 V (for example, measuring channels).
  • Unipolar power supply (3-36 V) is typical for embedded systems, sensors, and industrial electronics.

Open channel resistance

Determines losses and the effect on the signal:

  • 1-10 ohms is the minimum loss, such devices are ordered for low-impedance sources, audio/video, and precise paths.
  • 10-100 ohms - universal for sensors and ADC inputs with correct matching.
  • 100-400 ohms are inexpensive analog switches, multiplexers and demultiplexers, which are more often suitable for simple tasks where accuracy and load capacity are not critical.

Leakage current

Channel leakage current is important for measuring systems and high-resistance sources. It affects accuracy, especially at high resistances and low currents.

Switching time and setting time

If the signal needs to be switched frequently and quickly, it is important to look at the speed of the analog switch, multiplexer, or demultiplexer. On/off time (tON/tOFF) - how much time passes from the control command to the actual opening or closing of the channel. The setting time is how long it takes to wait after switching so that the output signal becomes stable and can be measured without noticeable error.

Housing and installation

  • DIP - usually used for prototypes and repairs.
  • SOIC/TSSOP is the standard for serial cards.
  • The QFN is a compact solution, but more demanding to install.
