Attenuators are indispensable in radio frequency technology, measuring complexes, audio equipment and communication systems. The main purpose of the device is to attenuate the signal power, whether electrical, digital or optical, without distorting its shape.

Advantages of using attenuators

They improve measurement accuracy, protect expensive equipment, and eliminate interference and distortion. Optical attenuators allow you to precisely adjust the level of light power in the fiber. Programmable digital models can be used to automate testing and calibration processes and ensure stable operation of complex systems.

What are attenuators?

  • Passive ones. These are the most common and reliable devices based on resistive or optical elements. They do not require external power supply, are characterized by wide bandwidth, linearity of characteristics and high stability. Examples: fixed, stepped, and stepless (adjustable) attenuators.
  • Active ones. They can not only weaken, but also enhance the signal. A separate high-tech class is programmable and digital attenuators with interface control, which provide remote control and high accuracy of setting the attenuation level. They are often ordered for specialized applications.

How to choose an attenuator

When making a purchase, you need to focus on several key parameters.

  • The amount of attenuation (attenuation): measured in decibels (dB). It can be fixed (for example, 3 dB, 10 dB, 20 dB) or adjustable in a certain range.
  • Operating frequency band: the range in which the attenuator retains its stated characteristics (for example, from 0 to 6 GHz).
  • The standard of connectors (connectors): must match the connectors of your equipment (SMA, N-Type for RF; FC, SC, LC for optical).
  • Maximum input power: a critical parameter, exceeding which may cause damage to the device.
  • Attenuation accuracy and stability: especially important for measurement and calibration tasks.

Installation and configuration recommendations

Attenuators are usually connected to a break in the cable line between the signal source and the load. It is important to make sure that the connectors are connected tightly and without misalignment. When using adjustable models, the setting should be done smoothly, avoiding sudden changes in the level.
