Power diodes are semiconductor devices consisting of two layers of semiconductor - p- (anode) and n- (cathode). A "pn" junction is formed at the boundary of these layers.
Power diodes conduct electric current from the anode to the cathode, that is, they are uncontrolled electronic switches with one-way conduction. Diodes are in a conducting state (closed-switch state) when a forward voltage is applied to them.
Power diodes are used in the manufacture of electrical energy converters, automobile and tractor power generators, and powerful rectifiers.
