Reference voltage sources (ION) generate a stable, precisely set voltage, which is used as a "reference" for the operation of other circuit nodes. It is designed for minimal drift with temperature, load, and input voltage changes, so it helps to get repeatable and accurate results.
ION is used wherever the accuracy of measurements and signal conversion is important. Reference voltage sources are purchased for use:
- in the ADC/DAC;
- precision sensors and measuring paths;
- industrial automation and data collection systems;
- laboratory devices, medical and telecommunication equipment;
- power supplies and controllers;
- portable electronics and automotive components.
Types of reference voltage sources
According to the principle of inclusion
They can be sequential or shunt-type. The first type works as a mini stabilizer in a power failure: inside there is an error amplifier and a control element that generates a stable reference voltage relative to ground at the output. This type is convenient to use when a support with good load capacity and low output resistance is required. The shunt ION turns on parallel to the load and maintains an almost constant voltage, shunting excess current.
By output type
- Fixed ones. Preset ratings are given (for example, 1,024 V, 5 V, etc.). This is the most common option for accurate measurements, because the nominal value and characteristics are stabilized by the manufacturer and it is easier to ensure repeatability.
- Adjustable. They allow you to set the output with an external divider/resistors - this is convenient when the support must match a non-standard level, for example, for a specific sensor range or ADC input.
- Programmable. They change the level via a digital interface (or by selecting modes/pins), which is useful for devices with multiple measuring ranges, automatic calibration, and self-diagnosis.
According to the technology of support formation
The classic version is a zener diode. This type of reference voltage source is simple and inexpensive, but accuracy and temperature stability depend on the specific design and usually require careful mode selection and filtering.
The most widespread technology of these chips is bandgap, a support that generates a voltage close to the "basic" reference and provides good repeatability and acceptable temperature drift. Precision/low-noise ions are ordered for measuring technology and high-precision metrology.
Common mistakes when buying and using basic power supplies
- The choice of the bearing is based only on the rated voltage, without taking into account accuracy and temperature drift.
- Ignoring noise requirements when an unsuitable source introduces ripples.
- The use of general-purpose ION instead of precision ion in measuring circuits.
- The absence of a load capacitor in shunt devices.
