Optocouplers with transistor and diode outputs provide perfect galvanic isolation, therefore they are an indispensable component in modern electronics. Their key task is to disconnect the circuits by transmitting a signal between them using light (creating a reliable "optical barrier"). Inside the sealed case there are two main elements: a emitting LED and a receiver - a phototransistor or photodiode. They protect against high voltages and interference, and increase the reliability of industrial and energy systems.

Varieties of optocouplers

The product range is divided according to the type of output stage:

  • Transistor optocouplers (PC817, TLP621, 4N25) are a universal solution for isolating slow analog signals. Their key parameter is the current transfer coefficient (CTR), usually 20-600%.
  • Optocouplers with Darlington output (4N32). They have an ultra-high CTR to manage a heavy load.
  • High-speed optocouplers with diode output (6N136, HCPL-0701). They provide digital signal transmission at speeds up to 20 Mbit/s for RS-485 and CAN interfaces.

How to choose the right optocoupler

Transistor models are ordered for galvanic isolation of microcontroller circuits from power switches. High-speed modifications are used for isolation in pulsed PSUs or high-speed interfaces. Optocouplers with a high CMR are purchased to work in interference conditions.

Important selection criteria:

  1. The transfer rate. Must exceed the frequency of the signal. Using a slow optocoupler for fast interfaces will cause distortion.
  2. The type of output. Determines the possibility of direct connection of the load (transistor) or the need for an additional circuit (diode).
  3. Insulation voltage. It must correspond to the maximum potential difference between the circuits.

Incorrect selection or installation leads to malfunction. Common mistakes:

  • Speed Mismatch - Using a slow optocoupler (PC817) for 1 Mbit/s transmission causes signal loss.
  • Ignoring the load - buying a model with too low a CTR to control the relay causes uncertain operation and heating.
  • Lack of input protection - connecting an LED without a current-limiting resistor causes it to burn out.
  • Interference neglect - Using a conventional optocoupler in a noisy environment without high CMR causes false alarms.
