Batteries
76Batteries are direct current sources, the distinguishing feature of which is the possibility of multiple recharges. The material of the electrodes and the type of electrolyte used determine the scope and characteristics of the battery.
Lead batteries are used in uninterruptible power supplies, security and fire systems, emergency lighting and warning systems. They are made in a hermetically sealed case, which ensures efficient and safe operation of the batteries. This is the best choice for large and powerful power supplies. Lead-acid batteries are sensitive to negative temperatures, cannot be stored in a discharged state, and the fast charge mode is unacceptable to them (usual time is from 8 to 16 hours).
Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are widely used as a replacement for standard batteries (batteries) in mobile phones, laptop computers.
The main disadvantage of nickel batteries is the memory effect: if the battery is charged when it is not completely discharged, the capacity decreases. NiCd batteries withstand a large number of charge/discharge cycles, have a long shelf life, and can be operated at low temperatures. NiMH batteries, compared to NiCd, are less prone to memory effect, less toxic, but have a relatively limited service life (about 500 charge/discharge cycles).
Lithium batteries are considered the most efficient. They are widely used in small-sized mobile equipment. Lithium batteries are not subject to the memory effect, withstand negative temperatures well, are weakly discharged during long-term storage, but have a relatively high price.
