PWM controllers allow you to control the electrical load using pulse width modulation. Instead of simply turning the power on and off, they adjust the power by changing the duration of the signal in each cycle. This control method ensures smoothness, energy efficiency and stability of the electronics.

Compared to linear control, PWM controllers have significant advantages. These include high efficiency (there is almost no loss of energy in the form of heat), as well as the compactness of the circuit - lighter and smaller components can be used. In addition, the devices are flexible in configuration, so they can easily adapt to different types of loads and operating modes.

How to choose a PWM controller

When purchasing devices, it is important to take into account the technical parameters, working conditions and the type of load. Key criteria to help you choose the right model:

  • The bit depth. The higher it is (for example, 8, 10, 12, or 16 bits), the finer you can adjust the power, speed, or brightness. A higher resolution is desirable for LED dimmers and audio controllers.
  • Frequency. Smooth operation, absence of flicker or vibration depends on it. Medium frequencies are suitable for motors and fans, high-frequency devices are often ordered for LED lighting.
  • Output current and voltage. The PWM controller must match the load characteristics of the motor, power supply, etc. For high capacities, drivers or power switches (MOSFET, IGBT) are usually used.
  • The management interface. There are inexpensive devices with analog input (potentiometer) and designed for digital control (I2C, SPI, UART).
  • The number of channels. Single-channel models are suitable for controlling a single load, while multi-channel models are suitable for systems with multiple zones, such as RGB-LED, multi-motor systems, or distributed control.
  • Security features. The PWM controller can have protection against overheating, overload, short circuit.
  • The form factor. SMD enclosures are compact, ideal for mass production and automatic assembly. DIP enclosures are convenient for prototyping, testing, and repair.
