Zener diodes (Zener diodes) are semiconductor devices with two leads (anode and cathode), designed to limit the voltage to a certain level. The peculiarity of the zener diode is that it must be included in the circuit in the opposite direction (anode to minus, cathode to plus). The zener diode operates in breakdown mode. Until the moment of breakdown, small leakage currents flow through the zener diode, and its resistance is high. When a breakdown occurs, the current passing through the zener diode increases sharply, and its resistance drops. Therefore, in the breakdown mode, the voltage on the zener diode remains at a certain level in a wide range of reverse currents.
