SMD LEDs are light-emitting semiconductor devices that convert the electric current passing through them into light radiation of a narrow range of the spectrum. Such light-emitting diodes are mounted on printed circuit boards using SMD technology.

The principle of operation of SMD LEDs is as follows: with the direct passage of an electric charge through pn junctions, current carriers (holes and electrons) recombine (break), while emitting photons (electrons move to other energy levels).

The best emitters are direct-gap LEDs, in which the zone-to-zone optical transition is allowed.
