Varistors are semiconductor resistors with two terminals, the electrical resistance (conductivity) of which varies depending on the applied voltage, that is, varistors have a non-linear symmetrical current-voltage characteristic.
Varistors are capable of sharply reducing the value of their resistance by several orders of magnitude (from GOhm to Ohm) when the threshold value of the applied voltage is reached. Due to the absence of follow currents during an abrupt change in the applied voltage, varistors are widely used in the manufacture of protective devices against surges.
