Distinctive features of the LRS and RS series of power supplies from MEAN WELL

Quite often, when choosing a suitable power supply for general use of the initial (basic) level, the question arises – what are the differences between the series of LRS case-type power supplies from the RS series similar to them. Visually, the power supplies are very similar to each other, and they also have the same or very similar values of technical characteristics and parameters.

There are few pronounced consumer properties that distinguish these series of power supplies. Therefore, when choosing a suitable power supply, you should be guided primarily by the main technical characteristics and features, then evaluate the availability and availability of power supplies in the required quantity in stock and price at a given time.

Historically, the LRS series have been the development of the RS series while maintaining their characteristics and best properties, but with some reduction in cost. Thus, power supplies of the LRS series tend to have smaller overall dimensions (within the same power series) and a lower profile height (1U, 30 mm). Secondly, there are differences in the series in terms of output power, that is, the LRS and RS series do not overlap in the full range of output power. The third distinctive feature is that the RS series of power supplies use electrolytic capacitors with a temperature range of +105°C, which determines their somewhat greater reliability in operation at elevated temperatures.

Distinctive features of the LRS series power supplies

The power supplies of the LRS series are AC/DC converters in a case design, with an output voltage of the standard range – 3.3, 5,12, 15, 24, 36, 48V DC, rated power 35, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 350, 450 and 600 watts (power is highlighted in red, which are not in the RS series). The following features can also be noted:

  • Low self-consumption: <0.2W for LRS-35/50, <0.3W for LRS-75/100, <0.5W for LRS-150, <0.75W for LRS-200/350.
  • Ultra-compact body and low profile with a height of 1U.
  • Protection: against short circuit, overload, overvoltage (all models), overheating (LRS-150/200/350 series).
  • Extended operating temperature range: from -30°C to +70°C (LRS-35/50/75/100/150); from -25°C to +70°C (LRS-200/350).
  • Cooling due to natural ventilation (LRS series up to 200W inclusive), forced ventilation (LRS series over 350W).

Distinctive features of RS series power supplies

The power supplies of the RS series are AC/DC converters in a case design, with an output voltage of the standard range – 3.3, 5,12, 15, 24, 36, 48V DC, rated power 15, 25, 35, 50, 75, 100, 150 Watts (the red color indicates the power that is not in the series LRS). Additionally, the following features can be noted:

  • Low self-consumption: <0.5W for RS-15/25/35/50/75.
  • The use of electrolytic capacitors +105°C.
  • Protection: short circuit, overload, overvoltage (all models), overheating (RS-15 series only).
  • Standard operating temperature range: -25°C to +70°C (RS-35/50/75/100/150); -20°C to +70°C (RS-15/25).
  • Cooling due to natural ventilation: all RS series inclusive.

The power supplies of the LRS and RS series are general-purpose power supplies of the initial (basic) level and are designed for use in a wide range of operating conditions, including industrial equipment, industrial control systems, electrical and electromechanical equipment, electronic tools and devices, household devices and so on. They can be used as general-purpose AC/DC converters in production automation, process control, security systems, telecommunications, etc.
