Noise meters (sound level meters) are devices that are designed to measure the level of acoustic sound signals (not to be confused with loudness) in the air.
Sound level meters consist of:
- omnidirectional microphone;
- amplifier;
- corrective filters;
- detector;
- integrator (integrating sound level meters);
- indicator.
In fact, sound level meters are microphones to which a voltmeter is connected. An increase in the sound pressure level with which the noise signal acts on the membrane leads to an increase in the voltage indicator, which is displayed on the indicator device.
