Ionistors are electrochemical devices that are capacitors with organic or inorganic electrolytes, the plates in which are double electrical layers between the electrodes and electrolytes. Functionally, ionistors are hybrids of capacitors and chemical sources of electric current.
The thickness of the electrical double layer of such devices is extremely small, so the energy stored in ionistors is greater than that of conventional capacitors of the same size. At the same time, due to the use of a double electric layer, the surface area of the electrodes increases. It must be borne in mind that the operating voltage of ionistors is small and in most cases does not exceed 2.5-5 volts.
