The idea of the practical application of electric discharge for purposes of artificial illumination was proposed by Russian academician Vladimir Petrov. At the dawn of the theory of electric current, he first discovered the possibility of electric lighting. Electric arc, or arc of Petrova, represents nothing more than a plasma electric discharge at atmospheric pressure.
